Purple Audio Action - 500-Series 1176 Style Compressor
The Purple Audio Action is a 500-series compressor reminiscent of an 1176 limiting amplifier. Controls include input and output gain, attack, release and a five position ratio selector with 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, 20:1 and lastly ∞:1, which works the same way as pushing in all four ratio buttons on an 1176.
Many of the parts and features are taken from the Purple Audio MC77 which is based on revision E 1176 audio circuitry including a constant impedance 600 ohm input attenuator feeding the input transformer. This makes the input more resistant to overload by hot signals. After the input transformer, the signal is attenuated by the same gain reduction FET as in the MC77. The attenuated signal is buffered by a class A KDJ3 opamp, which feeds the output fader. Lastly, a class AB KDJ4 output opamp drives a custom hexafilar nickel and steel output transformer. The total gain (with no attenuation) is 45dB, just like the MC77.
The Action can be stereo linked by connecting pins 3 and 6 on the edge connector. If used within a Purple Audio Sweet Ten 500-Series chassis, a second 1/4" output can be used to link two modules. In other manufacturer chassis, there is no easy wa to link modules and modification will be needed.
