Neve Elements 88R Dynamics

The Neve Elements 88R Dynamics is the dynamics section of the 88R console as a standalone Elements unit: an analogue VCA compressor, limiter, gate and expander, eight channels in 2U, with digital control and full recall. It is the counterpart to the 88R EQ, and the two together give you a complete 88R-style channel strip in the rack.

The compressor is a VCA design with a continuously variable ratio from 1:1 to infinity, so it will act as a gentle glue compressor or as a hard limiter depending on where you set it. Attack is fast — 3ms for 20dB of gain reduction — with release adjustable from 0.1 to 4 seconds, and auto make-up gain keeps the level steady as you push in. The gate and expander share the same 0.1 to 4 second release and offer a range down to full attenuation, which makes them as useful for cleaning up a noisy source as for tightening drums.

VCA bus linking lets you group channels for stereo or bus compression, and a dedicated sidechain key input on a 9-pin D-sub means you can trigger the dynamics from an external source. As with the rest of the range, the audio path is analogue and the control is digital — the Element Control Plugin (AAX, AU, VST3) or the Neve Elements app gives you every parameter, with snapshots, multi-step undo and control grouping.

Use it standalone, with the 88R EQ or 1084 EQ in a larger Elements system, or from the E-Controller and Elements Upstand Screen on the 8424E console.
