SPL Venos - Stereo Bus Tube Compressor
SPL Venos - Stereo Bus Tube Compressor
The SPL Venos is a 1U 19" stereo bus compressor built around a variable-bias tube design, drawing on the same fundamental circuit principles as many legendary vintage tube compressors. Where it departs from tradition is in its two exclusive hyper-compression modes — Focus and Punch — which open up compression behaviour previously unavailable in any variable-bias tube unit.
Underpinning it all is SPL's proprietary 120V technology, operating at ±60V internally to deliver exceptional headroom, dynamic range, and signal-to-noise performance.
The Venos operates on the principle of a bias-controlled remote cutoff tube. The bias - the voltage on the tube's grid is the sum of the Input, Threshold, Rectifier, Mode, Attack, and Release parameter settings, giving the compressor a deeply interactive, musical feel. All controls are implemented with detented potentiometers or switches, covering both channels simultaneously for easy recall and auditioning.
Six compression modes shape the behaviour of the sidechain signal path. The first three - Linear, Modern, and Vintage each integrate a different analogue filter into the sidechain, determining how the compressor responds to different parts of the frequency spectrum. Linear applies only a subsonic filter below 20Hz, Modern adds an analogue bandpass filter suited to contemporary mixes, and Vintage uses an empirically derived filter curve developed by SPL founder Wolfgang Neumann.
The two hyper-compression modes, Focus and Punch, take a fundamentally different approach. Rather than using a sidechain filter, a special circuit causes the compression characteristic curve to drop after reaching its maximum, a behaviour sometimes referred to as negative compression, where the ratio effectively inverts. Focus tightens the midrange while retaining size and life in the signal; Punch delivers an unmatched transient impact without harshness.
An external sidechain insert (Ext SC mode) allows a signal to be routed out via balanced XLR send/return jacks to an outboard equaliser or any other device, with the processed signal fed back to control compression. Alternatively, a completely independent source can drive the sidechain. Three rectifier options — germanium, silicon, and LEDs further shape attack and release characteristics at a circuit level.
Analogue passive EQ presets AirBass and Tape are placed after the compression stage but before the output level control, allowing gentle tonal shaping as a final step. AirBass lifts both low and high frequencies by approximately 2dB; Tape emulates the typical frequency roll-off of a tape machine. A large VU meter displays gain reduction, with a calibration trimmer accessible on the front panel. A rear-panel ground-lift switch eliminates ground-loop issues.
Construction is equally considered: a 4mm-thick anodised aluminium front panel, solid milled aluminium knobs, a powder-coated steel chassis, and all key components mounted using through-hole technology for the best possible component selection. The Venos is manufactured entirely at SPL's facility in Niederkrüchten, Germany.
